What people like is honesty . . . My film career took off once I came out. -- Ian McKellen
What a fabulous testament to authenticity.
Authenticity means being who you are, authentically. It means being earnest.
It means being aware enough of who you are, being courageous enough in who you are, to be yourself. To make conscious decisions in life.
As opposed to running on autopilot, controlled by Mind Apps. When that's your mode of operation, who are we? Are you really you? Or are you somebody else? An NPC in the game of your own life.
Frances Frei says we can sniff out authenticity in others – we know when somebody is authentic or inauthentic. But here’s the caution in that.
We view the world, including others, through our own filters, our own Mind Apps. Which means that if we, ourselves, are not authentic, then we’re going to see others as inauthentic, even when they are, actually, their authentic self.
And here’s a possible explanation. When we know that we are not authentic, we find it difficult to image that anybody else is. We suspect others of the same inauthenticity. Again, even when they are, in fact, authentic.
I’ve certainly experienced this, from both sides.
And to add to the difficulty, because this is a filter, a Mind App, we typically can’t spot it in ourselves. It’s an implicit knowing, not necessarily a conscious knowing, that we are not really being who we are.
And, when we hold back from expressing our own authenticity, we are less likely to trust others, and they are less likely to trust us in return.
Further, living a life without authenticity sounds very similar to the top regret of people at the end of life -- I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
Which sounds remarkably like the top regret of mid-career professionals -- I wish I hadn’t listened to other people about what I should study and pursue.
Which means, until you establish your own authenticity, you’re likely to be trapped in regret, living a life of if-only-s, unable to fully move into resilience.
So unfortunate for people who are stuck at that point.
Because in all of this dance of life, one of the goals is to create an environment, a culture where each of us is safe, welcome, celebrated, and cherished in our different-ness, in our own authenticity.
Like the art of kintsugi, where broken and fractured vases and vessels are pieced back together with molten gold, we accept the quest of a celebration of all the points of different-ness. In ourselves, and in others. And in so doing, we create something even more beautiful than the original.
All part of . . . being earnest.

Tired of intrusive thoughts? Just think of them as a library. Books don't fly off the shelf at you, demanding to be read. YOU choose which book (thought) you want to think about and how long you want to think about it. When you're done, you just put it back on the shelf. That way, YOU'RE in control.
On my journey through this life, I have come to realize that things change, no matter how much we want them to stay the same. This is especially true in business.
