This famous statement seems to support the idea of the power of affirmations -- when I think positive things about myself (affirmations), I can accomplish whatever I tell myself I can do.
On the other hand, when I think negative things about myself, I don’t accomplish the things I tell myself I can’t do.
And certainly we’ve all heard about the power of positive thinking. Some coaches and experts in the area even have a specific formula that they recommend you should use when you craft your affirmations.
But are affirmations enough? Do they even work?
In my experience, I’ve had some success with affirmations, but it’s limited, and it takes a LONG TIME for them to have any visible impact in my life.
Again, in my experience, when we rely on affirmations, we’re like Peter Pan, thinking happy thoughts and hoping they’ll make a difference. We’re wishing that the thing we’ve affirmed were true.
And, when our subconscious mind knows it’s NOT true, when it really doesn’t believe what we’re affirming, you can bet that it will respond to that statement with something along the lines of “you WISH” or “yeah, right.” RIGHT???!!!
I’ve seen that countless times in my work with people using EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) – that subconscious resistance to a positive statement. And those subconscious things we tell ourselves sabotage all the wonderful intentions and affirmations we flood our conscious minds with. Because our subconscious mind is a million times more powerful than our conscious mind.
So here’s where afFORMations come in. Rather than just using a positive statement, in the form of an affirmation, we turn the affirmation, the statement, into a question.
When we turn the statement into a “why” question, we short circuit our subconscious mind’s snarky response to our affirmation, because now, that powerful subconscious mind has a task. It’s like a 5 year old – you know how kids love to ask “why” – and it’s off on an adventure, a treasure hunt to find the answer to the question. Because we’re assuming that what we’re asking about is already true or that it has already happened.
So our subconscious mind is no longer the passive recipient of the affirmation, it’s an active participant in the quest to find the answer to the question.
We know that the quality of our lives is determined by the quality of the questions we ask. When we ask the right questions, every day, we can change our lives!
Because when we ask those questions, our minds begin to focus on all the good things, rather than all the not so good things in our lives.
It’s important to ask your questions as “why.” When you ask why, you’re searching for the motive, the reason behind the thing you’re asking about. As opposed to asking “how,” which is the process for doing it.
And the reason is simple – you can know how to do something, but not do it. I know how to improve my physical stamina, but I may not do it. I know how to eat more nutritious foods, but I may not do it.
So, tell me, why are you so successful? Why are you so prosperous? Why are you so fabulous?
