Values Alignment

We all have values, ar at least we say we do.

What about you? Do you have values? Do you know what they are? Are you actually living your values? Is your life in alignment with your values? Or are your values more like the furniture in your mind? Nice decorations, but they don't really impact your life on a day-to-day basis.

Do you know your answers? Or you're not sure?

Here's a way to begin to gain clarity around everything.

First, make a list of everything that's important to you about a particular area of your life -- for example, work/career, health, relationships, finances . . .

Make the list as long, or as short, as you like.

For example, use a spreadsheet, and in the 1st column, list everything that's important to you about relationships -- trust, love, intimacy, fun . . .

Keep asking and keep writing until you feel "empty" in that particular area of your life. Then, in the next column, put your values in order of priority, most important all the way down to least important.

You may also use this prioritization excercise as an opportunity to consolidate some of the values you listed in the 1st column, so that as you write them in the 2nd column, you have broader concepts about the values that are important to you.

Now, focus on the top 5 values that you've identified and priortized -- practically speaking, it's hard to do much with more than 5 values.

Next, ask yourself this question for each of your top 5 values:

In terms of percentages, how much NOT (fill in the blank) is in your life right now?

For example, if fun is a value you have for your relationships, ask yourself -- how much NOT FUN is in your life right now with regard to relationships?

Be honest . . .

Write the percentages in the 3rd column next to each value.

Now, examine the percentages in the 3rd column -- that is the measure of un-alignment with each of the values you have identified.

Are you aligned with your values? Are you living your life in a way that expresses your values? Or are your values just furniture?

Either way, think of 3 things you can do today to bring yourself into greater alignment with your values. And do them!

And ask the same question every day, and do those things every day.

And pretty soon, you'll be living your life in greater alignment with your values.

And as you increase your internal and external consistency, as you live more authentically in alignment with your values, you'll find that your joy and happiness increase.

Certainly a worthy value!
